An Rx or a prescription refers to the doctor’s advice to take a particular medicine, along with the set of instructions and dosage directions that come with the advice. Although prescriptions seem like just a small piece of paper, they are considered as legal documents in that they are hard copy evidence that an individual, the doctor, is taking responsibility for the health of the person he gives the prescription to. Prescription meds are the group of medicines that can only be bought if a doctor’s prescription is presented, as opposed to medicines that can be bought freely without Rx. A prescription drug usually has possible side effects that can be dangerous if the drug is taken wrongly or in excess, which is why distribution of such drugs are controlled and regulated. The reason why they are also called legend drugs is that all prescription drugs are required to come with legends, which are considered as the mark of being prescription-only meds. They should also come with detailed instructions on how to take them and how to store them. They should also have an extensive list of the ingredients to warn people who may be allergic to any of the ingredients. Also, prescription drugs should only be distributed to patients who suffer from medical conditions not treatable by other, safer drugs, like non-prescription meds. Different countries have different legalities when it comes to prescription drugs.

Rx drugs in the United States

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration is responsible for monitoring usage of prescription drugs. There are some laws regarding prescription drugs in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. According to the Act, medical professionals namely physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and optometrists are rewarded with the right to prescribe drugs to patients. The law also allows nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetist, and assistants to prescribe medicines as long as they do so under supervision. However, registered nurses at the basic level cannot do any prescribing.

The dangers of Rx drugs

It is a known fact that prescription meds pose certain risks to takers. Despite this, they are still being prescribed. So why exactly are they somehow indispensable? Well, it’s because of their guaranteed effects, which can treat certain medical conditions that are already way past the abilities of milder, over-the-counter drugs to treat. But the fact that they are effective doesn’t mean that they should be welcomed freely. Prescription drugs are still undeniably dangerous, especially when taken without proper supervision. In fact, as ironic as it may sound, prescription medications happen to be one of the top four leading causes of death in the US. They are also responsible for millions of hospital cases in a year, and are blamed for several addiction cases. The fact that every single prescription drug out there comes with certain prices, in the form of side effects, doesn’t help any. Most prescription drugs are simply a bit too strong and contain unnatural ingredients, which are reasons why they can attack the body negatively if taken in excess. The most severe effect of prescription drugs is on the liver. They can weaken the liver and make it vulnerable. Side effects also come in various forms such as fatigue, dizziness, sluggishness, and the likes, which make it hard for people to identify them as side effects. 

Rx drugs: a danger to animals

Aside from the danger they pose to the humans who take them, Rx drugs are also dangerous to animals. There are some prescription drugs that work both on humans and animals. It has now been found that animals are also vulnerable to their negative side effects just like humans are. Like humans, animals can also even die due to the prescription meds. Thus, if you or your pet is advised to take prescription drugs, make sure that you follow your doctor’s instructions and take caare not to take the drugs wrongly or in excess. Always remember intake schedules to avoid getting mixed up and taking more than you should. Exert the same monitoring efforts for your pets. If you keep your eyes peeled and be disciplined in your intake, you and your pet, if you have one, will be safe from the dangerous effects of the prescription meds you need to take.
